ASB, problems with communication

The office of examinations had made a change to in my exam schedule 8 days before I was going to the exam. They are allowed to change the exams up till one week before the actual exam date. We, the students, have to look for the changes as Aarhus School of Business (ASB) is not imposed to inform about any changes.

This meant that I, tuesday evening, was informed by one of my co-students that our exam started tuesday morning at 9 a.m. So Wednesday morning I went to the office to ask weather I would be allowed to attend the exam when I hadn’t been there to get the paper the previous day. Our staff is very pleasant and said that it would not be a problem. I would just loose one day. Luckily for me we have got a whole week to do this exam so that meant six days for me.

Although I know that Im supposed to keep myself informed about the exams, I still think it is unreasonable that the days may be change up till one week before the examination date. And I is directly contradicting with the governments idea of having the students finish studying as fast as possible when they do not even bother to inform us about changes! It all works electronically, so it is not very difficult to send a message to the students affected by the change.

Show hidden files in Finder

As I have had to show hidden files in Finder so many times, I thought others might find it useful. The system files in Finder are hidden by default. However, it is useful to know how to show these files.

You have to locate the application “Terminal”. Now there are two ways to find this application. Either go to spotlight and type “Terminal”, and chose the application or locate Terminal in Applications/Utilities/ chose Terminal.

In the Terminal Type:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder

The first line, will tell Finder to show all files. To get this working, Finder must be restarted, hence the second line “killall Finder” will restart Finder and show all files, system files and non-system files.

To revert to the original state, simply type FALSE instead of TRUE, like this

In the Terminal Type:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder

This will revert Finder to the original state when it comes to the hidden files.

It is a very handy thing to be able to do!

using iSync with iCal and Addressbook

iSync is a feature in OS X, that is overlooked by a lot of mac users. You can find the application by typing “iSync” in Spotlight. So here I will explain a little about.

iSync is a little application that allows you to connect your phone via Bluetooth or USB to your mac.  Hereby enabling you to sync your addressbook and calendar with the one on your phone. Click on the link (Default supported Phones) for a full list of default supported phone.

If your phone is not on the list, fear not, a lot of people have provided a number of ways to get their phone working and made the answer available to the rest of us. I should mention that it the mobil company that have to release a plugin to iSync, so that it is possible to use your phone with iSync. However, I have with success implemented: SonyEricsson W580i, K850i and Nokia 6300 into my iSync.

If you need any help finding a plugin just leave a comment, and I will try and help.

I have finally had the time, and found the right plug-ins to protect my site from the various spam-bots. Well, that of course remains to be seen. Hopefully these plug-ins should help me from being spammed.

Anyway, I have made it possible to create a user-login to be able to comment on my posts. Hopefully the comments should help me improve my posts, and tutorials with the right form of criticism.

You may now comment =)

iPhoto edit problem

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

So I had a problem with iPhoto. Problem: Whenever I tried to edit a picture in iPhoto it didn’t work. Im currently running iPhoto 7.1.3, just so you know wether this will help you or not. I have my iPhoto dir located at an external hdd, though I don’t think it matters if it is on your hdd or an external hdd.

Problem description:
When trying to apply effect or edit with iPhoto, the changes didn’t affect the picture once I applied the changes. I figured it had something to do with my permissions to change the pictures that I couldn’t apply changes to. Though I couldn’t see any difference using Finder.

Solution
When you open iPhoto, press and hold down alt+option-key. This will bring up a dialog that looks like this

Rebuild Photo Library

Rebuild Photo Library

I chose Examine and repair Iphoto Library file permissions, and the dialog said that some permissions needed to be repaired. So thats what I did, and it worked out.

It is recommended to do a backup of your archive. I didn’t do it, and nothing is missing. I won’t recommend anyone doing the same, as worst case scenario would be to have all my pictures erased.

Anyway, this solution worked out for me, I hope it will help you too =)
