Campusnet – Ideas from a Student/User

At my university (Aarhus School of Business, University of Aarhus) students have to use a system called Campusnet. The purpose of this system is to make it easier for lectors and students to communicate. The lectors can upload syllabuses, assignments and so on. The students can see their class schedule, exams, hand in assignments etc. The system is actually very good, however, there is definitely room for improvement.

The university suggests that students use the calendar provided by Campusnet, to keep track of appointments and other things that might or might not be related to the university. I found out, while trying to understand why they wouldn’t make Skemahapser an official solution. The problem here is that it is impossible to have an appointment which is continued until a specific date at an interval. If I wanted to put in my workout program, I would have to type every single event into the calendar.

-> So one good change would be to be able to create appointments which can be continued until a specific date at an interval. And to make it easier to subscribe to Campusnet calendar.

All lectors have their own way of writing a syllabus and other information that students need in the coming term regarding information on lectures, books and reading materials. This means that all students has to print out a syllabus, and a weekly schedule into which they can put the details of what needs to be done for the lecture.

-> Instead Campusnet should provide a form for all the lectors to fill in with details of the coming term. The form could hold details arranged by lesson; lesson, topic, reading material (book pages/ articles), assignments, other, notes. This way all syllabuses would have the same layout, making it easier for the student and the lector. At the same time Campusnet could set up a function to cross-reference the students classes with the syllabus and schedule. This should make it possible to give the student a overview of what had to be prepared for every lecture.

A really great thing would be if all universities wouldn’t try to reinvent the wheel every time they wanted a new thing. ASB is a member of EQVIS and other certificates, which shows that the school is up to international standards. So why do they not have a system which has international standards and is the same at all the institutions that carry these certificates. That would be a great help for all lectors and students.

Skemahapser, iCal and ASB campusnet

Skemahapser is a online application that allows students at ASB to download or subscribe to their campus calendar. It works with iCal so that you can subscribe or download your calendar to your own calendars.

  • If you subscribe, you will be able to see changes as soon as the subscription auto-updates.
  • If you you choose to download your calendar to your iCal, you will have to manually download every time changes have been made to the campus-calendar.

To use the function click here and fill in the form with your details. If you want to subscribe to your CampusNet Calendar in iCal you have to follow these instructions:

  • Open iCal
  • Click “Calendar>Subscribe…”
  • And type/copy the following line

“webcal://it.afdelingen.dk/skemahapser/iCal.aspx?username=AB12345&stud=true”

  • Where it says AB12345 fill in your CampusNet logon-id instead.
  • A new window opens and you have various options. I recommend the default settings except for the “auto-refresh”, which I have set to every day. I would set this setting depending on my schedule.

I have not tried the function on outlook, though it seems to me that the possibility is offered.

I hope you will find this possibility as useful as I do. If you have a mobile that you connect to your mac, it is possible to load the calendar on to your mobile device. For help see my post “iSync your Mobil“.
