Disassembling the iPhone

iPhone alu cover inside out

Yesterday I ventured into the iPhone hardware world, as I tried combining two broken iPhones into one working iPhone. I had one iPhone which was bricked, and after hours (read a 100+ hours) I finally gave it up, as I did not have the knowledge to unbrick the iPhone. The other iPhone had a broken home button, which effectively made the iPhone useless.

Anyway, I use this guide: “Installing-iPhone-1st-Generation-Display-Assembly” from ifixit.com to disassemble both iPhones and afterwards combining the working hardware from each iPhone. In the guide they use specific tools, but I found that a small screwdriver and a small kitchen knife and a pair of tweezers would do the job just as well. Continue reading

Continue reading

WordPress 3.0 this week?

WordPress 3.0 DevelopmentOn the 25th of december 2009, Jenifer Wells, who works with automattic, published “Setting Scope” on WordPress.org. In her article she summarized how the development process had been before and how it was going to be for next release WordPress 3.0. To sum up the development cycle was going to be a lot more focused than previously and the core team were going to make a development plan before starting the process. As a part of the process they asked the WordPress community which features and enhancements they would like to see in WordPress 3.0. This resulted in 186 suggestions from the WordPress community, and some of the suggestions I found very interesting.

I have been following the development of WordPress 3.0 with excitement. It is evident from the developer site that developers are working hard to get WordPress 3.0 done.

When the feature freeze for development came 1086 tickets had been accepted into the next release of WordPress. Continue reading

HowTo fix: Airport has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet.

My girlfriend could not connect to our network, and Airport told her: Airport has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet.

The problem was that her mac would self-assign a IP address, 169.x.x.x and Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0. It seemed to be connected to our Time Capsule, though it did not get a IP address by the DHCP server. I tried renewing the DHCP but that did not work. I also tried accessing a ip address, as it could be an DNS error, this was not the case either.

Problem solving

I fixed the problem by manually setting up the network settings, to make sure they matched my own in, DNS Server, Router, Subnet Mask, and IP address +1. That worked but this could only be a temporarily solution as she uses her mac multiple places.

So I adventured out into the great indexed space of google to find a solution to the problem. As it turned out quite a few people was addressing the problem, and it seems to be a problem that Apple have had this problem for quite a while. In my search I found the problem has occured in an update to Apple OS X Leopard somewhere between update version 10.5.2 and 10.5.6. While the mac in question is at OS X 10.5.8 the problem still seems unsolved by Apple.

To fix the problem with Airport self-assigned IP it tried the following. Continue reading
